Joseph Jefferson

2026 All-State 4A Jazz Band Director

Dr. Joseph L. Jefferson is an award-winning educator, performer, and scholar serving as Associate Professor of Music and Director of Jazz Ensembles at St. Olaf College. He is known for his versatility across jazz, classical, and commercial styles, performing nationally and internationally with artists such as Vanessa Williams, Sean Jones, and Catherine Russell, and the Cab Calloway Orchestra.

 

Recognized for his impact in music education, Dr. Jefferson was named a 2023 “40 Under 40” honoree and received the 2022 Ellis Marsalis, Jr. Jazz Educator of the Year Award. He has presented at major conferences including JEN, TMEA, FMEA, and the International Trombone Festival, and has served as a clinician for Jazz at Lincoln Center and a judge for the 30th Essentially Ellington Festival.

 

His leadership has guided student ensembles to national recognition, most recently with St. Olaf Jazz I's invitation to perform at the 2025 Midwest Clinic. His international work includes performances and teaching in Brazil, Thailand, and Bermuda.

 

Dr. Jefferson holds degrees from Norfolk State University, Shenandoah Conservatory, and West Virginia University. A Yamaha Performing Artist, he believes deeply in the spiritual connection between music and the soul, bringing that passion to every stage and classroom.
